Normally this wouldn’t be too unusual, except the Aurora went missing twenty years ago, lost to the mysteries of space…until now. An audiobook adaptation narrated by Lauren Ezzo was released alongside the hardback edition via Macmillan Audio. My biggest issue though was the narrator SHOUTING every time the story had emotional or scary dialog! If you enjoy what we do and want to see it continue, please take a moment and subscribe or donate now! This is one of those time-warp books—the ones where you look away from the clock, then look back and it’s suddenly way past your bedtime.

The story was an incredible and unique premise but MY GOODNESS the repeated mentions of a male characters chest every couple of minutes had me wanting to tear my hair out. The sense of isolation on this lost ship is so complete with echoes of its violent past you can almost taste it in the back of the throat. It’s not difficult to do these days, but with Reed, a junior investigator from Verux’s QA Department, I’m almost always clear. Anyhow I ate this book in literally one sitting because I was in the mood to be freaked out and it delivered tremendously. Given that Dead Silence was one of my most anticipated releases of the year, I feel very lucky that it held all three of these things and executed them exactly the way I like it.It feels like this book wanted to be a mash-up of Event Horizon and The Haunting of Hill House, but ended up being more like Disney's Haunted Mansion in space.

Barnes, though, weaves an amazing character arc for Claire and the others, making you dislike, love, pity, and root for her all at once, and keeping you completely engrossed. Although I did enjoy these sequences, they go on for just a tad too long and perhaps another edit would have moved the story on at a slightly speedier pace. now act like a teenage girl, then woman up be brave, conquer all, until she needs a hug, but don't touch her, unless she wants you too, but run away once you do. I wish that I wasn’t such a chicken because this sounds really good and I’m kinda tempted to try but also… I’m just The Ultimate Chicken™️? The other characters were a bit cliché and stereotypical but they didn’t frustrate me as much as Claire.

Dead Silence mixes horror, mystery and sci-fi into a thrill ride sure to shock you out of your reading rut. And the questions introduced at the beginning combined with the fast pacing made it really hard to put this book down. After all, being able to make a salvage claim on such a luxurious and famous ship could literally change all of their lives for the better. Battered, scratched up, smelling of overheated metal, with shitty airlock seals that are pretty much a full-time job to keep hard-foam-repairing even with Verux swapping them out for equally shitty replacements every time we finish a job. It’s always so satisfying when a book you’ve been highly anticipating lives up to your expectations.
