She simply states that the rain starts to fall, and the context of that scene fills in the dark or grave atmosphere for us. Descendant of the Crane takes place in a fictional kingdom inspired by China where the people were once ruled by greedy monarchs that used soothsayers to secure their rule. They're understated and restrained in a consistent way that makes it feel like a coherent courtly culture, underpinned with specific philosophy. Joan He manages to weave The thing is, I like to nurture what I’ve written over time—tending to the words like a gardener tending to the garden.

Overall, Descendant of the Crane is a lovely, assured debut and a formidable addition to the growing body of diverse teen literature! As Hesina adjusts to her new power as queen, she finds herself relating to her enemies and questioning the purely benevolent view she always held of her father. I genuinely hoped there would be a chance of preserving my original vision (3 total companion books) and selling books 2 and 3 to the same pub and continuing the story, if I could just prove that there was an audience for book 1. The climax was a virtuoso performance, leading to a poignant epilogue with just enough bread crumbs to set the ground for future installments. Now, I'm lucky enough to say that my current pub, at the time of writing this, will be re-releasing DOTC as a paperback come September 27, 2022. They were people with almost magical powers who could do amazing things like seeing into the future. However, while book 1 did very respectably when it released in 2019, it did not quite explode by publishing industry standards.

More importantly, the same could have been achieved without sacrificing some of Hesina's character development with that last-minute change of heart. The government has an effective anti-corruption system, the education and job market are based on merit and not nepotism. I enjoyed how it progressed through the book and how at the end they’re not already thinking of each other as soulmates, but rather are willing to dedicate their time to understanding and knowing one another better.

I had not managed to organize my puzzlement into a question before the plot begun eddying around in a speedy, gasp-out-loud, page-flipping style—each new certainty leading not to the next steppingstone but into a quagmire. Descendant of the Crane was one of the most hyped up books of 2019 that I’ve seen, and I can now see why. And all of the reviews from my Goodreads friends had me psyched and ready to rock on the hype train.
