Figo's countryman Nuno Gomes then flipped the scoreline on its head when he beat Neil Alexander in the home goal with an excellent. Some of those on show still looked in decent shape. Defoe and Van Persie, for example, were sharp and bright and both took their goals with the quality that they were famed for during their careers. The celebrations had started on Saturday evening as Rangers hosted a ‘Night of Legends’ at New Edmiston House. The likes of Alex McLeish, Arthur Numan and Jorg Albertz took to the stage alongside broadcaster Emma Dodds to tell tales of title triumphs and relive the treasured memories from their glittering Ibrox careers. RANGERS LEGENDS: Waterreus, Papac, Alves, Amoruso, Hutton, Ferguson, Mendes, McCann, De Boer, Defoe, Miller The Rangers Legends squad is presented by Rangers’ Official Event Supplier, 5 Stars, and is set to feature some of our biggest and most loved Legends.

Gough helped Rangers win each of their nine-in-a-row league titles, alongside three Scottish Cups and six League Cups. While the Scottish Football Writers’ Association even named him as its Player of the Year in 1988/89. A Gers player had not won the SFWA title since 1977/78. Key Events

Souness was confident in Ferguson being a success in England as he had taken up Rangers’ captaincy at only 22 years old. He also won the SFWA Player of the Year award in 1999/2000 and 2002/03. The final year of Ferguson’s first spell at Ibrox also saw Rangers win the treble.

Rangers have enjoyed the services of numerous legendary goalkeepers over the years but no shot-stopper can overshadow ‘The Goalie’, Andy Goram. He featured 260 times for the Gers from 1991 to 1998 and touched five league titles, three Scottish Cups and two League Cups. Rangers’ First Team Coach Roy Makaay will also join the occasion by playing for the World Legends team and sampling a taste of what’s sure to be a sell-out Ibrox as a player. Tavernier has served the Gers with distinction since arriving in Glasgow to amass more than 390 appearances. He has also offered the Premiership giants treble-digit hauls of goals and assists across all competitions. While Rangers inducted him into their Hall of Fame in 2023.Paul Lambert digs up Celtic legends referee as he's left stunned by Liverpool going all Michael Jordan Ex-Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler managed the World XI which featured stars such as Jaap Stam, Michael Essien, Emmanuel Petit, Yakubu and Georgi Kinkladze. For Rangers Lorenzo Amoruso, Bruno Alves, Alan Hutton, Pedro Mendes, Ronald De Boer and Kenny Miller pulled on the blue jersey again for the occasion. The term ‘legend’ is often overused in the game today and that was perhaps the case, with all due respect, for some of those in both sides but the Rangers team – skippered by a true great in Barry Ferguson – still had multiple medals on their respective records.

Barry Ferguson can’t wait to return as captain and said: “Everyone knows how much I love the club so to have the opportunity to lead the Rangers Legends team as Captain is an honour and I can’t wait to play again in front of the fans.” Jermaine Defoe put in a man of the match performance but it wasn't enough for the Rangers Legends to see off a World XI. On Sunday March 26, a star-studded Rangers Legends squad will play a World Legends squad full of global talent at Ibrox stadium at 2pm. Even after the Three Lions had won the 1966 World Cup, Baxter’s confidence on the ball was as clear as day when the Tartan Army met the global champions in 1967. He took his country to another win over the Auld Enemy and juggled the ball whilst his teammates found space.Rangers then opened the scoring just short of the quarter of an hour mark. Alan Hutton played a delightful cross into the path of Jermain Defoe and, in typical fashion, he was ice cold in front of goal as he took the ball out of the air with his left foot before chipping the ball over David James from close range to put the Gers ahead. His 15 years at Ibrox further returned a staggering 20 major honours with 10 top-flight titles. McCoist helped to make Rangers the all-conquering force in Scotland from the mid-1980s to the late-1990s. His haul of winners’ medals featured nine League Cups and a Scottish Cup. Around 30,000 were in attendance in Govan today for the game with all money raised during the match going to charity. The quality of football may not have been up the standards that some of the players performed at, indeed at times the game went down to a walking pace but as always during occasions like the one today charity is the real winner. WORLD LEGENDS: James, Huth, Stam, Dawson, Chimbonda, Essien, Petit, Downing, Wilshere, Van Persie, Yakubu No sooner in the contest it was all-square at three-a-piece. Defoe this time linked up with Kris Boyd who appeared as a half-time substitute and, after finding himself in the area, he saw his initial strike kept out well before smashing in the rebound from the angle as the Ibrox faithful saw a sixth goal on the day.

Among the array of Rangers legends, there is a definite place in Ibrox history for former Gers captain Barry Ferguson. The midfielder skippered the ship from 2000 to 2003 and again from 2005 to 2009. He also lifted a huge 16 major titles through the midfielder’s spells in Glasgow. Rangers even enjoyed their only European success so far during Greig’s spell as their captain. Their six-time Scottish Cup winner lifted the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1971/72. He was also regularly a forceful presence and a true leader of men to see the Gers win three trebles. Rangers recognised Tavernier, plus fellow modern-day legends Allan McGregor and Steven Davis, for their iconic contributions. Tavernier joined the club whilst they were competing in the Scottish Championship and helped to secure the title in his debut campaign at the club.

Playing for Rangers was one of the highlights of my career so it is always a privilege to relive that experience and to do so for a match celebrating our 150th anniversary makes it even more special.
