In one crucial experiment, the researchers split their participants into two groups to compare their ability to view themselves from the outside. Tens of thousands of people around the world are taking part in The Perception Census, an ongoing scientific study aiming to uncover the fascinating but invisible ways that our minds are each unique - making it the largest study of its kind, and the first major citizen science project in the world into perceptual diversity. Importantly, the study did not find the same speeding up of judgments when an inanimate object (a lamp) was introduced instead of a person, even though the lamp was roughly the same size and was oriented towards the letter in the same way as the person’s. In other words, empathy is an innate quality we can all make use of to design for the people around us! How do you view the world? – We asked people how much they agreed or disagreed with different statements about perception and consciousness. Questions which had not previously been asked to a public audience on such a large scale. Once we realize that most of what we do is driven by our sub-conscious, we can make an concerted effort to override our automatic responses. We can choose to be disloyal to our ideas, even if it is just for a few minutes, to view the world using our opponents filter.
